First Run

And the first meeting is history! It was held April 1, 2007, a great success for the new club.

Bryan is the home of the club’s sponsor Phil. The first group which numbered twenty sports cars, meet in the parking lot of Jack-in-the-Box / Krogers on the corner of Highway 6 and Booneville Road. They exchanged howdys and hand shakes, and briefly enjoyed each others company. Some of them were able to drive on to the Wal-Mart in Huntsville on I-45. Once there we numbered fifteen. Traffic was a minor issue in the parking lots as there had been many lookie-loos. Most smiled and waved as they slowly drove by the shinning sports cars parked a row. Proudly displayed cars ranged in age from 1964 up to 2007.

Each car carried at least one automobile enthusiast. There were many new people to meet, cars to see and talk about, news to share, and photographs to be taken. What fun to have seen so many smiling faces and hear the heartfelt laughter of club members.

Soon it was time to take off, and with a plan mapped out the procession started; we where off to the Texas Prison Museum for a little culture. On display they had hand made prison weapons, a slightly used electric chair (361 executions), and an example of a prison cell. In said cell several club members had tried it on for size. It was determined that none were cut out to be criminals. The cell was just too small for comfort; besides nobody wanted to sit on a stainless steal toilet.

With a movie about the history of the Texas State Prison over and a chance for the Old Farts to get a little rest it was time to take off on a cruise. Phil, the fearless leader led the eager drivers south down the I-45 service road. The cars meandered through construction zones and wild flowers ablaze in bright colors. Luckily for Phil the “fresh oil” sign was bogus. We turned west onto FM 1375, it curved and twisted as we drove through the green forest. Sun shine raced on the road before us and the wind caught in our hair (well those who were in convertibles and had hair). We came to the quaint little town of Montgomery, birthplace of the great Texas Flag. There we turned East onto State Highway 105 where we made our way past beautiful Lake Conroe.

It had been pre-arranged for us to stop and eat at a restaurant near Conroe. We were seated and treated well by the kind staff of Vernon’s Kuntry Katfish. Bless our poor little waitress, for there were 3 different Rick-s in our bunch. Most folks had the catfish some had burgers, both of which are highly recommended by yours truly. Jokes and stories were scattered across the tables. No one spilled anything and I'm proud to report no one needed a bib, we all had a great time.

As you know time passes quickly when you are having fun and soon it was time to be on our way. We all said our goodbyes as we look forward to the next meeting of the Texas Old Farts Sports Car Club.

see y’all!
